BRENTON BROADSTOCK AM - COMPOSER
MY STUDENTS & COMPOSITION TEACHING
Since 1982 I have been fortunate and proud to teach harmony and counterpoint, orchestration and twentieth century music to hundreds (thousands!) of very talented music students.
In 1990, when I became Head of Composition at the University of Melbourne, I devised and implemented a new composition curriculum that is still in use today (2019).
It consists of a series of graduated projects that are designed to build compositional technique. Each project requires reading and listening, practical exercises and the completion of a work that highlights a specific compositional technique, structural device, orchestrational or media challenge e.g. minimalism, moment form, serialism, electronic media, extended technique etc. The number of projects decreases over a 4 year degree but their complexity increases. In 1st year there are 8 short projects, 2nd year there are 6 medium projects, 3rd year, 4 longer projects, 4th year and Honours, 2 or 3 major projects.
I have supervised and mentored many outstanding COMPOSITION students. Here are some of them (in alphabetical order):
